Obituary of Phyllis Auliano

February 28, 2021

Phyllis Auliano (September 1, 1932 - February 28, 2021)
Service Date: March 5th, 2021

Phyllis Auliano was a lifelong New Yorker, with a passion for family, friends, and learning. For Phyllis, 'New York' meant Union Square -- a neighborhood she loved -- and where she lived and worked.

Phyllis enjoyed a long successful career at Guardian Life Insurance Company, where her intelligence and attention-to-detail got noticed, allowing her to rise through the company, eventually retiring as Second Vice President. She considered her friends and co-workers to be her 'Guardian Family', and continued to remain involved with the company and her friends even after retirement.

Family was very important to Phyllis, and she was instrumental in organizing and hosting countless gatherings and dinners over the decades. Her warmth and generosity meant that many close friends were also included, and became honorary family members.

After retiring, Phyllis redirected her interests and love-of-learning towards synagogue activities, regularly attending (and looking forward to) the weekly Brotherhood Synagogue Bible studies classes. She also had a keen interest in finance, Israel, and politics.

Phyllis remained active, never losing her wit, intelligence, or humor -- and those of us that laughed with her and loved her will feel this loss for a long time.

Phyllis will be laid to rest in Nassau Knolls Cemetery, joining her beloved husband John, who departed 4 years earlier. Both will be greatly missed.

I worked with Phyllis at Guardian for many years. She was a strong influence on me and many of us who were associated with her and I personally learned a great deal from her. I send my condolences to her remaining relatives.

My dear Phyllis! My guardian, my angel! Love from the first sight when we met in 1993. Your big heart, sweet and innocent soul, unconditional love, never ending support and inspiration, sharp business women and a role model, always pretty with beautiful smile and fun to be around with. My best friend - I was able to share with you my bad and good. I am blessed, because I knew my Angel by face. I will always remember, will miss you terribly and will love you forever. RIP!

Rest In Peace Phyllis! Phyllis set an example for us all with her dedication, loyalty and love for her family and for her Guardian family. She was a proud lifer and a true Guardian for Good! Her values, work ethic and sense of team spirit are her legacy that is still a part of Guardian's culture today. I always enjoyed seeing her in the cafeteria reconnecting and catching up with her colleagues. I am grateful that she blazed the trail for many of us who have a connection to Guardian. She will be missed. May her memory be for a blessing.

ON UNION

for Phyllis Auliano

Disorientation.

Of bleating taxis, old buildings
pressed hard against one another
tilting somehow west,
clumsy scaffolding of the place.

Of Hudson shore lapping
spillage from ghostly steamships
smudging the painstaking lines
drawn by canal builders.

Of "union, union,"
unpronounceable with closed lips,
square of your years that lounged
over the length of Fourteen Street.

Moist, if I am to name them,
poised to disappear over an ocean's east,
about to uproot the signage
taken with you forever.

Left in your wake:
mute concrete,
text of aphasic asphalt,
this unforgiving expanse

Of the wholly lost
of the almost unspeakable
save the cipher
of a kiss remembered.

Phyllis lived an extraordinary life, filled with generosity, wisdom and friendship.

Hearing so many nice memories from family, neighbors and co-workers is beautiful tribute to the positive influence she had on all the lives she touched. She forged connections and friendships that lasted a lifetime, and beyond.

I will forever be grateful for her warmth and kindness; and happy that Phyllis was such an important part of my life for so long. Thank you for everything -- your loving nephew, Dan.
